pregnancy-symptomsChemical and false pregnancy is the appearance of signs of pregnancy even when a woman is not pregnant. The term chemical pregnancy is commonly used to refer to a condition where a miscarriage occurs in the period between a pregnancy test and the onset of next menstruation.

False pregnancy or pseudocyesis as it is known in medical circles is not a common occurrence in humans and in many cases it turns out to be psychological. The signs and symptoms of a false pregnancy are similar as in clinical pregnancy that is, pregnancy that has been confirmed by an ultrasound examination. There are natural signs of suppression of normal menstrual flow, morning sickness, weight gain and tender breasts. The most distinctive characteristic of a false pregnancy is that a woman is convinced that she is pregnant. The abdomen expands just as it does in pregnancy. However, the symptoms normally resolve under general anesthesia. A very small percentage of women actually experience labor pains.

There is no known physical cause of false pregnancy and there are no recommendations for treatment. In certain cases the patient may be given medication for treating symptoms like suppression of menstruation.

Chemical pregnancy is just like any other miscarriage except that it occurs very early. In the event of a chemical pregnancy conception actually does take place. The miscarriage occurs when the only evidence of pregnancy is a blood test or a home pregnancy test and before an ultrasound examination shows a gestational sac. Typically it occurs in the fifth week of gestation or within a week after missing a period.

There is no data available for how common chemical pregnancies are but it is generally believed in medical circles that almost 70% of conceptions end in miscarriages.

Chemical pregnancy symptoms include vaginal bleeding within a week of a positive pregnancy test. Early detection of pregnancy is a good thing for those who need to know and the ultra sensitive pregnancy tests available in the market provide useful help. But the flip side is that many times these tests reveal chemical pregnancies, which otherwise would not have come to notice if the woman had waited for her periods. Clinically, chemical pregnancy symptoms are revealed by low hCG, the hormone produced early in pregnancy by the placenta and the basis of one kind of pregnancy test. The bleeding from chemical pregnancy is usually accompanied by more than normal cramps but recovery is fast.

Since chemical pregnancies happen very early they have little or no effect on the body. In most cases the periods that occur after chemical pregnancy are presumed to be a case of a normal period that is late. There are reasons to suggest that the menstrual flow after a chemical pregnancy is usually lighter than the normal flow.

There is no harm in trying to conceive after chemical pregnancy but some doctors do advice waiting for sometime after chemical pregnancy as a standard answer for all miscarriages. The difference between chemical and false pregnancy however is the primary factor that your doctor will be considering.
